I picked up an Xbox 360 cheap on Ebay the other day in order to stream my iTunes music and video collection down to my TV in the front room (and of course to play some HD games that involve guns). I gleefully unpackaged it and plugged it in. I knew that a lot of Xbox 360s had problems (in fact over 50% need returning) but I was hoping luck would be on my side. I guess not..

So I did a quick search around online and found that one solution could be to make the xbox overheat until it resets. Doesn’t sound too smart, but what the hell, worth a try I thought. Some people suggested wrapping a towel around it, however I found that jamming long match sticks in the two fans on the back worked a treat.

With the Xbox on and the matches jamming the fans wait for about 5 minutes. The Xbox will switch the screen off and two red light on the left side of the disk will come on. Turn off the Xbox now!

I waited a few minutes, removed the matches and powered her back up. The fans came on full blast and it loaded up fine! Seems to work, but I guess it’s temporary. Next time if it happens i guess i’ll need to try a repair.

At one point I was going to abandon alexdigital.com all together purely due to the amount of comment spam I would have to sort through on a daily basis. I was getting over a 100 per day, it was getting ridiculous.

Now I’ve discovered Akismet. And Wordpress comment spam is a thing of the past. It’s pretty easy to setup and install, although you do need a wordpress.com API key to get it working so be sure you’ve setup an account here.

Once you’re signed up and logged in over at wordpress.com you need to take a look in “My Account” and then “My Profile” and you should see your API key at the top of the page. Copy and paste it into Akismet, via your Wordpress control panel on the blog you’re installing Akismet on, and you should be good to go.

Take a look at all the rubbish mines been collecting..

I can’t believe I haven’t been using it before now! ANd don’t worry about missing legit comments. Akismet connects to central servers to get it’s data giving at an accuracy rate of over 99%!

I’ve had the evil Swine Flu. I got it the other week on the way back from Mauritius. After suffering a 12 hour flight next to a small child that was coughing and spluttering the entire time it’s hardly surprising.

I gotta say that it’s a bit over hyped. The main symptom is the hacking cough, which isn’t all that bad, and of course the fever which only put me in bed for one day. I mostly slept. Glad I’m over it now though – and hopefully immune!
